Shilajit resin: taste, texture and how to store the jar

What the resin looks and tastes like, why it turns hard or runny, and how to keep an open jar.

A jar of Hima Shilajatu shilajit resin on two slices of wood against a sand-colored wall

Open a jar of Hima Shilajatu resin and you see a nearly black, glossy mass. It is not a powder and not a liquid. What it does next depends on the temperature of the room.

Hard in the cold, runny in the heat

Buyers report the same thing in different words. Cold makes the resin thick and stiff. Warmth makes it soft and stringy. One buyer notes it runs a little when warm and thickens when cold, and stays dark brown either way.

Why did my shilajit resin go hard?

It got cold. Leave the closed jar at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes, or hold it in your hands, and the resin softens again.

What it tastes like

Strong, bitter and earthy. A buyer who drinks black coffee and eats dark chocolate had no trouble with it and compared the smell to burnt cocoa. Another wrote that it tastes terrible and takes it under the tongue.

Nobody in the reviews calls it pleasant. Plan for that before the jar arrives, and pick the way you will take it.

  1. Use the measuring stick to take 250 mg of resin each time.

  2. Add it to any drink you like, or let it dissolve under your tongue.

  3. Use it 1 to 2 times a day, 4 to 6 times a week.

Getting it off the stick

Cold resin clings to the wood. Scoop to the mark you want, hold the stick in a warm drink for a few seconds and stir. The brand's directions name warm water, tea or milk.

How do you dissolve shilajit resin in a drink?

Stir it into a warm drink until the stick comes out clean. The brand's directions call for about 300 mg, a pea-sized amount, in warm water, tea or milk.

Who should pick another form

  • You can't stand bitter drinks. The resin will be a daily chore, and a capsule from another brand may suit you better.
  • You want a fixed dose with no measuring. The stick takes a few seconds, every time.
  • You pack light. The jar is glass, and warm resin runs.

Storing an open jar

The label gives three instructions: wash the measuring stick after use and keep it dry, store the resin and the stick in a cool, dry place, and use the resin regularly.

DoWhy
Close the lid tightThe brand packs the resin in dark glass so it does not dry out
Keep the stick clean and dryThe label asks for it after every use
Store it cool and dryThe label's storage line; heat makes the resin run
Check the best-by date on arrivalOne buyer received a pack with 6 months left

How long does an opened jar of shilajit keep?

The jar carries a best-by date, and that date is the limit. A jar is 60 servings, so at 1 serving a day it is finished in 2 months.

If the date on a new jar is closer than the months you plan to use it, that is a reason to ask for a fresher jar from your order page.
